AVUCC Worship

Our Sunday morning worship service is perhaps the single most important way we implement and celebrate our values and beliefs in the life of our congregation. It receives the greatest level of participation of any program we offer. A special aspect of our worship is the "theater-in-the-round" shape of our sanctuary that allows us to face each other as we worship. Most members regard this unique setting and the warm, personal style of our worship to be among the most important assets we have as a church community. The sanctuary in many ways reflects our identity.

Our church service follows a pattern that has evolved over the years. Sunday worship begins at 9:00 a.m. For the children, the service includes a special Children's Time, which gives our children a sense of participation in our worship. Following the service, members and visitors are invited to an informal gathering in the fellowship hall for coffee and conversation. This too has also become an important part of our identity at CCAVUCC. Our Joint Venture Sunday School and Christian Education classes for youth and adults begin at 10:10 am. Nursery care is available during the morning service and educational program. Communion is celebrated once a month, on the first Sunday.

From time to time, however, there are departures from the usual format and setting. For example, we have services led by our lay leaders during the absence of our minister; outdoor services around the Gazebo in our Rose garden; and Taize services. In addition, we hold an annual Joint Venture Sunday service with our ECA partners. And to be sure, we have a variety of activities and services on the special occasions of the Christian calendar: Lenten soup suppers, Maundy Thursday and Good Friday services, Easter sunrise services, and Christmas candlelight services.

Music plays an important role in the worship of our church. A talented professional organist/choir director, shared with the ECA, skillfully facilitates a varied musical program with our Shalom choir and our Folk choir. We are proud of both choirs.
